Introducing: Bad Blackadémique

Announcing the Bad Blackadémique Blog !

The original idea for this blog came to me at the end of July 2019, as I was reflecting and preparing for my own New Year. I was about to move to a new state, about to start the biggest and longest stretch of school I’d ever been on, about to dive into total adulthood and self-sufficiency—head-first and grossly unprepared.

I wanted to create a window into the otherwise exclusive and inaccessible world of post-grad academia (in my case, blackademia).
I wanted a way to fuse my creativity into a handbook-heavy and footnote-fueled social sphere, one that was definitely not built around poems about diasporic identity or 4C hair tutorials.
I wanted a place to share my struggles, experiences, and triumphs by way of essays, stories, food, French, photography and more! So, I created this WordPress blog! I added some old, essential essays and photos, and made room for new work.

Aaaaaand then I promptly ignored it because it was suddenly time to start grad school. I fought to find the time to sleep, let alone time to write.🤷🏾‍♀️

Fast-forward to today, to another New Year, to the middle of a MUCH-needed break after an insane first semester. The need for this personal and creative space has only increased, but I’m finally ready! Over the past few months, I have consulted friends, family, fellow creatives, and even a few academic mentors for advice on how to make this blog the best it can be. Over the next few years, I hope to build a dually creative and academic profile that makes the duality of being black and in grad school a bit less of an enigma. Over the past few days, I’ve been trying to work up the nerve to finally get it going.

So, last night, I bought the domain! 🎉

I am scared. I am hopeful. I am capable.
I am also COMPLETELY unsure of how to to constantly contribute and create to this project when this upcoming semester is gearing up to be even more insane than the last one. 😰 Still, I’ve been greatly encouraged by watching other people pursue wonderful, scary, and creative endeavors and KILL👏🏾 IT 👏🏾

This paper, “Steppingstones:  A Demonstration of Black Feminist, Literary Work on the Path to Public Scholarship,” is an active work-in-progress. It was originally written in December 2020, with the goal of being presented at this conference, Disruptions and Eruptions (26-27 February 2021) and also as a final paper for a Black feminist and womanist theory …
